Three small cabins, worn but sturdy, sat spaced just far enough apart to grant a breath of privacy, but close enough to feel like a gathering of old friends. Each had a porch, a wooden rocking chair, and a little chimney that puffed lazy curls of smoke into the filtered sunlight.
Lanterns, each holding a warm flickering flame, hung from the trunks of nearby trees. Though it was still afternoon, the canopy above made the light soft and twilight-like. The lanterns glowed quietly, while fireflies sparkled in the distance. Above, long strands of bunting in faded colors swayed gently between limbs remnants of some forgotten celebration. 
No one ever remembered hanging the bunting, nor lighting the lanterns. They just… were. As if the forest itself had decided long ago that joy should be stitched into the branches and wonder woven through the leaves.
